It’s funny how drinking 8 glasses of water a day seems impossible but a bottle of wine or two over dinner is not unreasonable.

There are many reasons why drinking plenty of water each day is good for you, most of  those reasons will not directly link to improving your performance on a bike, however, if you are generally feeling healthy and well then you will have more energy for riding.

Remember a 2% drop in hydration leads to a 10% drop in energy/speed on the bike.

When out riding you should try to drink one 800ml bidon every hour!


Fatigue buster
One of the most common symptoms of dehydration is tiredness.

Aids digestion
Drinking enough water adds fluids to the colon which helps make things move smoothly…

A glass of water could help you concentrate, stay focused, refreshed and alert.

Clearer skin
Water flushes out toxins and can improve complexion

Hangover help
Help a hangover with a glass of water to hydrate the body and stop that pounding headache. Most effective if you can drink some water before you go to bed. Active recovery from your night out!

When I’m guiding a group riders frequently say that they are feeling tired and starting to get a headache after 2 hours of riding. When I look at there drinks bottles they have usually only drank 2-400ml of water/energey drinks in that time. No wonder they have these symptoms! Every 5 minutes or kilometer/mile take a drink, REMEMBER, when out riding you should try to drink one 800ml bidon every hour!

If you start to feel thirsty it’s too late you have already started to de-hydrate!
