Spain has much to offer for all cyclists from families, to mountain bikers and road cyclists alike there really is no better place to come on a cycling holiday. With over 320 days of sunshine the weather in southern Spain is pretty reliable too. In my opinion, the best way to explore any country is on a bike and Spain is no different, from 2 wheels you’ll experience the sights, sounds, culture, cuisine and friendliness of the Spanish people. Steeped in history Andalucia in southern Spain has much to offer in terms of culture and heritage too, the Cathedral in Sevilla is the 3rd largest in the world, the Mesquita in Cordoba is amazing and of course the Alhambra Palace is breathtaking & a world heritage site.
The Via Verde, ‘Greenway’, is a great place to go riding with your family on a cycling holiday in Spain as there is no traffic. These ‘Greenways’ have been established throughout Spain by converting unused railway lines into recreational areas for leisure cycling, walking and horse riding. The Via Verde de la Sierra runs from Puerto Serrano to Olvera covering 36km and has 30 tunnels. The longest tunnel being the “castle tunnel” some 990m and of the 4 viaducts along the Via Verde the one at Coripe is the most impressive at 237m long.
Andalucia in southern Spain has has a well deserved reputation for having some of the world’s best single track trails, technical down hills, free riding and cross-country mountain biking, combine this with the wonderful weather and you have the perfect location for your mountain biking holiday in Spain. Most towns are joined together by a network of vehicle width dirt tracks giving miles upon miles of XC style riding for the more adventurous there is an abundancy of quality single tracks on a huge variety of surfaces: forested, sandy, rock gardens & Moab style slick rock.
Did you know that Spain is the second most mountainous country in Europe, so it makes sense to come here on a road cycling holiday or training camp. The quiet roads, amazing scenery, great weather and delicious food make for an unforgettable cycling holiday experience. Spain and especially Andalucia is known for it’s great road cycling. Here in southern Spain you can ride through impressive mountain ranges which are dotted with white villages (pueblos blancos), through olive fields & vineyards and many Natural Parks. This area is frequently visited by the Vuelta de Andalucia and Vuelta de España, so if it’s good enough for the Pro’s then it’s good enough for us.
Ronda, Setenil & Olvera have recently been listed in Spains Top 25 most beautiful places to visit. Another great reason to take your next cycling holiday in southern Spain. Personally, I also would have included Grazalema & Zahara on this list, but I suppose I may be a little biaised!!
