Ronda
Situated on a plateau 780 metres above sea level, Ronda lies in the South West of the Malaga province. Protected by the the surrounding mountains, Ronda is steeped in history with many places of interest to visit. Amongst these are, the House of the Moorish Kings from within which you can walk down inside the cliff to the bottom of the gorge. The Ramparts of Xijara, which the Arabs built to fortify the town; three of the ramparts can still be viewed today. Also, Ronda boasts the oldest and biggest bull ring in Spain where Pedro Romero created the rules of modern bullfighting, Pedro is said to have slain over 6000 bulls.
Highly recommended during your visit to this beautiful region is a visit to the bridge in the centre of Ronda at either dusk or dawn. Looking over to where the sun sets you will see the blue peaks of the Sierra de San Christobal. They now form a part of a nature reserve for the protection of the Pinsapo tree and wildlife. To the left of this lies the Sierra Perdiguera which takes you towards Algerciras and Gibraltar . In the past this was a much used route for bandits and smugglers. Here you will also find the spectacular Cueva de la Pilates.
From the other side of the bridge, where the sun rises, are the Sierra Melegueta, Hidalga, Oregonal and the Sierra de Nieves which contain the Torrecilla. This is the highest point in the Malaga province at 1919 metres, from which on a clear day, you can see the whole of the Costa del Sol . From the Sierra de Nieves flows the River Guadalevin which meanders towards Ronda and through the impressive gorge and finally joins the rivers Alcobacin and Guadiaro.
Ronda has something to offer to everybody. Cyclist or non-cyclist, whether you are looking for a smart resturuant, traditional tapa's bar, or, something a little more lively, then this historic city is the place to visit.
