Cycling in Spain
Andalucia southern Spain
Spain is the second most mountainous country in Europe and has long been established as a popular holiday destination. When you think about Spain images of golden beaches, flamenco dancing, sunshine and siestas spring to mind. Claire and I also think about the Vuelta de Espana which is one of the three biggest Pro Cycling Tours, Bahamontes, Indurain and Contador are a few of the top Spanish riders over the years and more locally there is the Vuelta de Andalucia. Spain has become recognised as one of the best places to go for warmer weather training camps during the winter for your pre-season training.
Spain also has a large network of Via Verdes (Greenways) which are old railway lines that have been restored for recreational activities such as cycling, walking and horse riding. The nearest to us is the Via Verde de la Sierra. So, all in all, there is something for all levels of cyclists from leisurely excursions along the Via Verde and exploring the white villages that are synonymous with Andalucia to classic road cycling holidays and winter training camps. Over the recent years Spain has also become a mecca for mountain biking enthusiasts too! Mile after mile of quality single track trails that are linked together by vehicle width dirty tracks, a mountain bikers paradise.
The wonderful climate here in southern Spain provides you with excellent year round biking conditions. A great way to experience the Spanish culture, cuisine and countryside is on two wheels. The feeling of freedom that being on a bike brings and the satisfaction of exploring the countryside under your own pedal power is immensely rewarding but also good for your mind, body and soul, environmentally friendly and above everything else, great fun.
The perfect recipe for a great cycling holiday is
1) Sunshine, on average 300 days a year.
2) Cycling, good bikes and well planned routes.
3) Scenery, breathtaking views at every turn.
Blend the above 3 ingredients together and you'll find that there really is no better place to ride than here in Andalucia, southern Spain.
